  2. ‚Ä¢ Because present treatment programs for advanced mesothelioma usually do not have a major impact on the
  3.   disease, we strongly recommend participation in clinical trials of new forms of therapy.
  4. ‚Ä¢ Important studies are currently under way with combined treatment therapy, using, for example, surgery and
  5.   chemotherapy (cyclophosphamide + doxorubicin + dacarbazine) in combination with abdominal radiotherapy .
  6. ‚Ä¢ Another current trial involves the removal of larger tumor nodules, followed by intraperitoneal chemotherapy
  7.   with cisplatin and doxorubicin and a "second-look" operation to determine response. Radiotherapy is given if
  8.   there has been complete control of the tumor and more chemotherapy is given before the radiation treatment if
  9.   there is any residual disease left. The preliminary results of this combined program did produce a very
  10.   significant response rate with acceptable toxicity.
